Berlin, 9 September 2025 – mailbox.org, Germany's leading provider of secure digital communication, has undergone a comprehensive technical and visual relaunch and is now presenting itself as a holistic, digitally sovereign workplace. The trusted secure email service has evolved under the streamlined name "mailbox" into an integrated platform that unifies all aspects of modern workplace communication while maintaining European data protection standards and digital sovereignty.
Technical foundation rebuilt from the ground up
The new mailbox Suite brings together email, calendar, contacts, office tools, video conferencing and cloud storage in a single, intuitive solution – fully GDPR-compliant and running exclusively from German data centres.
"With mailbox, we've reimagined the digital workplace: independent, secure and intuitive. Our customers can communicate with complete autonomy and stay productive – whether they're in the office or working on mobile through their browser," says Balint Gyemant, Chief Product Officer at mailbox. "We're proud to have delivered a real breakthrough for our users that brings together digital sovereignty with state-of-the-art technology."
Intuitive design meets mobile flexibility
The technical relaunch features a completely refreshed user interface with enhanced dark mode, customisable themes and streamlined workflows. Smart keyboard shortcuts, seamless integration across all communication channels, and a new Progressive Web App (PWA) for mobile working round out the package – delivering an app-like experience directly in the browser.
Intelligent email features for better control
The email functionality now includes modern features like "undo send", email categories and enhanced reply options. Customisable read receipts let users control how quickly emails are automatically marked as read. Attachments from recent emails can be inserted straight into new messages, while adjustable font sizes and configurable labels allow for personal customisation.
Calendar and online meetings work in perfect harmony
The newly branded mailbox Office brings together calendar, contacts, document editing, surveys and chat in one integrated solution. Direct integration with mailbox Meet automatically links video conferences to calendar appointments: meeting links are generated automatically with calendar entries. A countdown alerts users to upcoming meetings, while optional participant flags enable flexible meeting planning. Mobile users get a dynamic week view, and the year view now works seamlessly across all devices.
New brand, unchanged commitment
Alongside the technical advances, mailbox has unveiled a completely refreshed brand identity. The move from "mailbox.org" to simply "mailbox" and the new product names – Mail, Office, Meet and Drive – that make up the mailbox Suite reflect a focus on clarity and ease of use.
This strategic shift maintains the company's core commitment to security and data protection. mailbox continues to reject advertising, tracking and data monetisation while ensuring full GDPR compliance and legal certainty.
"Our repositioning demonstrates that European technology doesn't just match the competition – it shows that data protection and transparency are genuine quality differentiators," says Peer Heinlein, CEO of the Heinlein Group, mailbox's parent company.
European alternative with German engineering standards
The timing couldn't be better: demand for European alternatives continues to surge. mailbox offers a key advantage over US services by remaining outside the scope of the US CLOUD Act. For businesses and public sector organisations, this means legal certainty through data processing and storage exclusively in Germany – perfect for compliance-sensitive applications.
"What people once dismissed as niche thinking has turned out to be ahead of its time," Heinlein adds. "I'm incredibly proud that mailbox represents the digital sovereignty our customers genuinely need."
Digital independence as core strategy
The mailbox relaunch aligns with the broader Heinlein Group strategy, which has championed security, data protection and digital independence for over 30 years, delivering comprehensive German-made alternatives through the Heinlein Support, mailbox, OpenTalk and OpenCloud brands.
With its complete technical redesign across all components, mailbox is setting new benchmarks for digitally sovereign workplaces in the European market. The new mailbox Suite is available immediately for new customers, with existing accounts being migrated gradually.
