Stiftung Warentest tested a total of 18 email options – including eight paid services such as mailbox – that offer plans for private customers. The services were examined and assessed in terms of set-up, usability, support, privacy, as well as their terms and conditions and privacy policy. mailbox received a mark of 1.8 and is recommended as an email provider for privacy. We are delighted to be ranked amongst the best providers for the third time.

Berlin, 7 January 2026 – Heinlein Hosting GmbH, the legal operator of mailbox, has received the BSI C5 Type 1 certificate from the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). This certificate from the independent testing agency confirms that mailbox fully complies with the BSI security criteria specifically for cloud services. Together with ISO/IEC 27001 certification and other awards, the certificate attests to the priority that the provider of the secure digital workplace attaches to email security, information security and data protection.
