2024–2025

Shaping the future

In 2024, we celebrated our 10th anniversary and launched the official beta programme for continuous innovation. In 2025, we received the "Software made in Germany" and "Software hosted in Germany" awards, which officially confirmed our quality. With the rebrand to "mailbox", we're modernising our brand identity and have developed the completely redesigned mailbox Suite.

2022–2023

Innovation from Europe

BSI certification confirmed our highest security standards. 2022 also marked the launch of OpenTalk – our GDPR-compliant video conferencing solution from Europe – as an important milestone for digital sovereignty. At the same time, we introduced Framadate for scheduling and Etherpad for collaborative text editing. In 2023, we completed our security portfolio with S/MIME integration for business customers.

2020–2021

The platform takes shape

In 2020, we expanded our web portal with secure video conferencing and developed into a comprehensive communication solution. In 2021, we introduced TLS 1.3 as well as flexible tariffs (LIGHT, STANDARD, PREMIUM) with professional telephone support to optimally serve different user needs.

2017–2019

Growth and design

With a complete website relaunch in 2018 and modern design, we opened mailbox.org to a broader audience. The further development of our security features set new standards. At the same time, we began expanding into a complete communication platform with enhanced office functions.

2014–2016

The secure beginning

The founding of mailbox.org began with the innovative "encrypted mailbox" as a secure alternative to international providers. In 2015, we introduced the mailbox.org Guard with PGP encryption in the browser and became the test winner at Stiftung Warentest. In 2016, our success was confirmed with another "Very Good" rating (1.4) and top marks for security and privacy.

1998–2013

From youth project to provider

What began in 1989 as a school newspaper project called ‘JPBerlin’ soon developed into one of the first providers of Internet access and web hosting for ‘ordinary’ people. Even as a teenager, our current CEO Peer Heinlein was already setting standards: PGP encryption was a matter of course from the very beginning, and we were also among the first to introduce spam and virus filters in 1998. In 2004, Heinlein Professional Linux Support GmbH was founded, which then became Heinlein Support GmbH in 2012. When Snowden revealed the NSA's surveillance activities in 2013, it was the starting signal for us to launch mailbox.org.

We chose mailbox because it is one of the best-known and most secure German email providers. Since mailbox invests heavily in the open source community, we want to give something back to the community.

We greatly appreciate mailbox because the issues that are at the forefront of mailbox are also what drive us in our daily work: security, data sovereignty, functionality – all based on open source software.

Security and sovereignty in communication have never been as important as they are today. Contrary to the global trend of entrusting this communication to data giants such as Google, Facebook and Co., mailbox has created a secure communication platform that we can recommend to all our customers with a clear conscience.

We have been impressed by mailbox since 2017. In addition to email, it also offers shared folders and calendars for our daily work. Another plus is that we have experienced hardly any downtime during our time using the service.

mailbox runs smoothly for us in everyday use. In addition to secure email communication, we also appreciate the ease of use of the file storage system, which allows the school administration and teachers to make documents available to our students and parents for download.

We are very grateful for the fast, uncomplicated service and the personal and competent support.

We have been with mailbox since 2017 – the decisive factors in our decision were the server location in Germany and the integrated option for mutual calendar sharing within the team.

Data protection is firmly anchored in our DNA, and we work exclusively with German partners in all sensitive areas. The professional mail hosting service provided by mailbox fits perfectly with our data protection strategy.

Unlike the tech giants, mailbox does not engage in surveillance capitalism. The digital footprint of students is minimised. An excellent solution for schools that take the data protection and privacy of their school community seriously.

As a young cooperative, email addresses with our own domain are very important to us, and we were impressed by mailbox's commitment to data protection. We also really like the video conferencing feature, which we use extensively in various working groups.

Our high standards for food also apply to software: a partner who is committed to a free internet and open source software is a perfect fit. We use mailbox as cloud storage for backups of our cash register and emails.

Business mailbox provides us with email, address book and calendar services from a single source. At the same time, security and data protection are not just ticked boxes, but are actively practised. This combination was decisive for us.
